Using hope and wish.

This website is all about basic English. Using hope and wish.
NOTICE: The future tense should be used to indicate hope about future. 
It seems to make sense. Unfortunately, grammar rules in English do not always 
make sense. I n this case, the rule is that the simple present tense should be used. 
So, use the simple present tense after the word "hope"
and can be used future time words.
 Hope and present real conditional. (possible)
CONVERSATIONS:
1. I hope it is sunny tomorrow. (It might be sunny tomorrow.)
Why? If it is sunny tomorrow, I will go swimming.
2. She hopes it snows tomorrow morning. (It might snow tomorrow morning.)
How come? If it snows, her school might be closed.
3. They hope the weather is nice this weekend
(The weather might be nice this weekend.)
Why? If the weather is nice, they can play outside.
4. I hope the bus is on time this week. (The bus might be on time this week.)
How come? If the bus is not on time, I will get to work late.
5. Jonny hopes he gets good grades on his next report card
(Jonny might get good grades on his next repot card.) 
Why? If he gets good grades, his grandparents will buy a bicycle for him.
6. Rani hopes she gets a raise soon. (Rani might get a raise soon.)
Why? If she gets a raise, her family is going to take a vacation.
7. We hope we sell a lot of new cars this month.
 (We might sell a lot of new cars this month.)
Why? If we sell a lot of new cars this month, we will receive a bonus.
8. We hope we find a cheap apartment tomorrow afternoon
(We might find a cheap apartment tomorrow afternoon.) 
 Why? If we find a cheap apartment, we will not live with our parents anymore.
9. Dona hope she gets accepted to medical college today
(Dona might get accepted to medical college today.)
  How come? If she gets accepted to medical college, she will become a doctor.
10. We hope the nation's economy improves next year.
 (The nation's economy might improve next year.) 
How come? If the nation's economy improves, our company's profits will increase. 

 QUESTIONS and ANSWERS with I hope.

1. Q. A. Will the teacher give a quiz? Ans. B. I hope the teacher gives a quiz.
2. Q. A. Will it rain tomorrow? Ans. B. I hope it rains tomorrow.
3. Q. A. Do you think the train will be crowded next week? 
Ans. B. I hope the train is crowed next week.
4. Q. A. Will our new boss be friendly? Ans. B. I hope our new boss is friendly.
5. Q. A. Do you think the economy will get worse this year?
Ans. B. I hope the economy gets worse this year.

Rule 1: I Wish with present unreal conditional.
Use the simple past tense (subject + the simple past) after the word "wish".
You have ever had a difficult situation and then regretted it.
SITUATION: I live in Florida. I do not know my neighbors. I am so lonely.
A. I wish I knew my neighbors. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I knew my neighbors, I would not be so lonely.
CONVERSATIONS:
1. I do not drive to work. I have to wait for the train every morning.
A. I wish I drove to work. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I drove to work, I would not wait for the train every morning.
2. I do not do exercise daily. I have to go on diet.
A. I wish I did exercise daily. B. How come you say that?
A. If I did exercise daily, I would not go on diet.
3. I do not have a good job. I am concerned about my future.
A. I wish I had a good job. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I had a good job, I would not be concerned about my future.
4. I am not an optimist. I get depressed often.
A. I wish I were an optimist. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I were an optimist, I would not get depressed often.
5. I do not take dance lessons every day. I feel "out of place" at party.
A. I wish I took dance lessons every day. B. How come you say that?
A. If I took dance lessons every day, I would not feel "out of place" at party.
RULE 2: I wish with past unreal conditional.
Use the past perfect tense (subject + had + past participle) after the word "wish".
SITUATION: I lived in Chicago. I did not know around city. I was confused.
A. I wish I had known around city. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I had known around city, I would not have been confused.
CONVERSATIONS:
1. I did not do my homework last night. I had to do it early morning.
A. I wish I had done it last night. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I had done it last night, I would not have done it early morning.
2. I did not take a flu shot this fall. I was sick this winter two times.
A. I wish I had taken a flu shot this fall. B. How come you say that?
A. If I had taken a flu shot this fall, I would not have been sick this winter two times.
3. I did not take my medicine on time. I felt miserable all day.
A. I wish I had taken my medicine on time. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I had taken my my medicine on time, I would not have felt miserable all day.
4. I was not prepared for my biology test. I got low grade.
A. I wish I had been prepared for my biology test. B. How come you say that?
A. If I had been prepared for my biology test, I would not have gotten low grade.
5. I did not drive to work today. I had to wait 30 minutes for the bus.
A. I wish I had driven to work today. B. Why do you say that?
A. If I had driven to work today, I would not have waited 30 minutes for  the bus.
